Aquatic Invasive Species
Fighting Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS)
Invasive species are plants, animals, or other living things not native to an ecosystem and cause economic and environmental harm. In lakes, ponds, and streams invasive species can grow and spread rapidly, crowding out native species by taking up space, blocking sunlight, altering water quality, and disrupting natural habitats. AIS infestations also impact recreation and shorefront property values.
There are currently two known infestations in the watershed
1. Androscoggin Lake (Leeds/Wayne) – Variable-leaf milfoil, found September 2020
2. Tilton Pond (Fayette) – Swollen bladderwort, found August 2023
